Embarking on a voyage where purpose collided with paradise, our Co-CEO, Ferial Puren, set flight on an Ambassadorial Mission to the enchanting archipelago of the Maldives nearly two weeks ago. Nestled amidst the breathtaking expanse of turquoise waters, she embarked on a journey to champion the cause of Living Cities Earth (LCE), weaving a narrative of sustainability and thrivability.
In the span of her expedition, Ferial has been the beacon of LCE’s vision, advocating for the Maldives’ ambition to achieve Net Zero Emissions while fostering a circular economy that harmonises with the unparalleled natural splendour of the region. But what progress has she made?
In a dynamic collaboration with esteemed figures like Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan, former president of the Maldives, and his son Jeffrey Hassan, Ferial orchestrated the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with two pristine islands in the Maldives. Bolstered by the endorsement of Minister Adam Shareef Umar, Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, Ferial engaged with two city councils in the northern reaches of the Maldives, laying the groundwork for transformative Integral City Development plans for Kulhudhuffushi and Hanimaadhoo.
The horizon of opportunity expanded further as LCE forged alliances with strategic partners deeply rooted in local landscapes. Among them, the China Maldivian Cultural Association (CMCA), led by Dr. Rasheed, emerged as a pivotal collaborator, offering insights and resources to navigate the Maldives' unique tapestry of culture and sustainability.
Reflecting on her journey, Ferial remarked, “What an enriching experience it has been, encountering the vibrant tapestry of people and places in the Maldives. Each interaction has been a lesson in resilience and stewardship.” And now, as she sets her course for Bali, anticipation brews for the next chapter—a rendezvous with co-founders and partners poised to shape the future of sustainable living in this corner of the globe.
Intrigued by the strides taken in the Maldives, one can't help but wonder: What lies ahead for Living Cities Earth on the shores of Bali and beyond?
